Husband and Wife Burglars Arrested

Police ambushed and arrested a husband and wife housebreaking team believed to be responsible for several housebreaking and thefts reported since December last year.

Police analysed the crime patterns of several cases of Housebreaking and Theft by Day where a similar modus operandi was used to break into the HDB flats which all had glass sliding windows along the common corridor. The culprits had smashed the glass windows near the levers of the windows, slid the windows open and climbed in to steal valuables such as jewelleries, cash, handphones and laptops.

Jurong Police Division formed a special team to hunt down the culprits. The team conducted intensive enquiries on the ground, checking with various pawnshops and secondhand dealers to trace the stolen items. Their efforts paid off when some of the stolen jewelleries turned up at a few of the pawnshops - pawned by a married couple.

As the suspects did not have a fixed place of residence, several days of ambush did not yield results. The breakthrough came when the officers found out that the male suspect had rented motorcars on the days the break-ins occurred.

On 31 Mar 2008 at about 11.30pm , Police arrested the man in an ambush at the multi-storey carpark of Blk 406A Woodlands Street 41. His wife was arrested at the void deck of Blk 401 Woodlands Street 41. A search was conducted in the rented vehicle the suspect was driving and items such as sachets containing substances believed to be controlled drugs, pawnshop tickets and contraband cigarettes were seized.

Commander Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheang Keng Keong commended his officers for their doggedness and dedication in their ground work which were crucial in solving the cases.

The 35 year-old unemployed man and his 31 year-old wife will be produced in Court No. 26 of the Subordinate Courts on 2 April 2008 at 9 am for an offence of Housebreaking and Theft By Day with common intention under Section 454 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries an imprisonment of at least 2 years and up to 14 years.
